Business OwnersAcoustics in your Business
Many businesses can benefit from an acoustically well-designed space. In fact, acoustics can be integral to the functioning of some businesses, such as those that require acoustic privacy – think about lawyer’s and doctor’s offices as examples. We are happy to work with business owners to determine acoustic performance targets and find design solutions to meet those targets. We provide the following services for business owners:
- Design and testing for sound isolation between spaces, including from neighbouring businesses or between rooms in your establishment.
- Design for acoustic comfort and performance within a space, such as reverberation time and background noise levels within a room.
- Mapping the locations of speakers and acoustic materials to optimize the acoustic performance of a space.
- Evaluation of noise from your business to adjacent areas, and vice versa.
OFFICE ACOUSTICS
There are potentially several aspects of acoustics that are important in an office space, including soundproofing, mechanical noise mitigation, and soundmasking. Private offices require speech privacy, so that conversations within the space are not easily heard in adjacent spaces. This is especially true for offices where confidentiality is a priority, such as medical and law offices. Open office spaces require a delicate balance – if there is too much background noise, it will be disturbing, but if it’s too quiet, the phone calls and conversations at nearby cubicles will be distracting. This is why soundmasking systems are often employed in open plan office spaces.
Restaurant Acoustics
The acoustical requirements for restaurants and cafes can vary widely depending on the facilities available and the desired ambience. Some establishments prioritize a lively environment, where music playback or the audio of the game is dominant. Other businesses prefer a balance between subtle background music and allowing customers to have a conversation without straining. There are also considerations of soundproofing between the kitchen and dining areas, and between other sections of an establishment, such as between the bar, dining room, and private event areas.
Industrial Noise
Occupational noise at industrial facilities, such as from manufacturing and processing equipment, can not only be disturbing, but damaging to hearing and even dangerous. The maximum safe exposure limits are set by applicable occupational health and safety regulations. We will work with you to assess the existing conditions, determine which sources should be reduced to meet regulatory and/or recommended limits, and recommend noise control measures to meet the noise targets.
